Textual Elements

In everyday life, text is abundant and used extensively to promote consumer products. In the packaging of cigarettes, textual elements found on and inside the package include: brand family name, brand descriptor, cigarette/pack descriptor (e.g., size), and slogans. These elements can be considered for their content (i.e., denotative and connotative meanings) and their form (i.e., the way it is visually depicted, which can also convey meaning). This glossary covers both aspects by considering the lexical items as a primarily textual element and its typography, discussed elsewhere, as a primarily visual element.
